Sensory-Based Ideas to Help Your Child Calm Down

Updated: Oct 29, 2024

Here are some ideas that may help your child calm down when they may be experiencing difficulty with sensory processing, emotional regulation, and/or behavior management:

  1. Get below their eye level and speak calmly

  2. Use a safe/calming space for them to use to calm down

    1. Safe space with limited toys and other items

    2. Soft blankets

    3. Weighted blankets

  3. Limit bright lights and loud noises

    1. Turn off some lights

    2. Use noise-canceling headphones

    3. Play gentle, calming music

  4. Movement or swinging back and forth can help calm, but may not always be available or appropriate

  5. Deep pressure (e.g., firm hugs)

  6. Try to figure out what any triggers might be and remove the trigger or the child from the trigger

  7. Implement a sensory diet in their daily routine

  8. Use less words. Say simple phrases.
