Home Sensory Activity for Picky Eaters

Updated: Oct 29, 2024

Picky eating can be very challenging for families. Here is an activity that you can do at home that may help to expose them to new foods in a fun way.

  1. Items Needed:

    1. Food items that your child likes.

    2. Food items your child does not like (e.g., raw carrot, raw broccoli, etc.).

    3. A sensory bin of your child's choice (if possible) (e.g., a tray of shaving cream, a bowl of flour and water, a bowl of bubbly water, a bin of dried rice or beans or noodles, etc.).

    4. Preferred toys or any other preferred object of your child's choice.

  2. Directions:

    1. Put non-preferred foods and preferred foods in a sensory bin of your child's choice.

    2. Add their choice of toys to the bin as well.

    3. Play with your child. Get messy. Have fun!

    4. Make the food fun to play with!

      • For example:

        • Have a toy pretend to eat, smell, or touch the food

        • Have your child smell the food

        • Have the child touch and play with the food

      • For example, broccoli can be trees or food for dinosaurs.....

***IMPORTANT NOTE: Be mindful of your child with small objects and be mindful of any allergies. Constant supervision is required due to choking hazards. Complete this activity at your and your family's own risk.***
